NAME: Rin Tohsaka
AGE: 18
CANON: FATE/Stay Night
CANON POINT: Heaven's Feel Route: After splitting up with Shirou at the Ryuudou temple, but before confronting Sakura at the climax of the route.
ABILITIES:
The Fate/ franchise is an enduring setting that has been active with many divergent and branching story lines. In January it will be 20yrs old — as such I will do my best to provide an accurate summation of what Magecraft entails, but it is littered with a lot of canon-specific or occult jargon that makes it difficult to stay on topic while being steadfast and clear (imagine being on a wiki dive three hyper-links deep just to get the definition of one item). Apologies in advance.
✧ MAGE/MAGECRAFT Mage → or "magus/magi" is the term for a practitioner of Magecraft, the magical science. This is opposed to a Magician (or Sorcerer) who is capable of bringing forth true miracles that are impossible to be reenacted at the current scientific stage. Most Magicians were (are) inhuman and capable of withstanding the World's rejection of True Magic. More than just a name, the term "Mage" defines a whole set of beliefs and lifestyle, the first of which is the desire to reach the "Truth". No matter the cost, they use all their assets and abilities to reach that goal, and any abilities gained in the process are a by-product. They hold no meaning except as a means to reach the Truth.
Truth / The Root → the source of all events and phenomena in the universe. Existing outside of time, it stores and archives information of all possibilities and events, past, present, and future, of the world. It is the place from where all Souls originate from and to where they return after death.
A Mage also dedicates himself to the study and refinement of Magecraft while driving himself apart of the values of common people in the process. He searches for the greater truths of the universe not to answer existential questions, but just for the sake of knowing. Ideally, a Mage would render his own self transparent while still retaining his ego. In reality most mages, especially those of the Mage's Association, are often caught up in petty power struggles.
Magecraft → the artificial reenactment of Mystery. The ability to bring about what is possible through science with supernatural means. The limits of Magecraft have changed with time, as science evolved some Magics from the past became possible through science.
Mystery → a sliver of power of many different types. Magecraft is, in essence, Mystery. However, since the beginning of the Common Era, human history has been in the process of systematically expelling Mysteries. To the same degree the light of science expands, the darkness of Mystery recedes. Magic → the highest class of Mystery that surpasses Magecraft and all current sciences of the age. "Magic" can be differentiated from "Magecraft" in that the consequences of its use are ostensibly "impossible" or "miraculous". Concepts like time manipulation, teleportation, spatial warping and quarantine, and the Resurrection of the dead are miracles thought to be possible only through the application of Magic.
Human bodies as they are now are not capable of withstanding Magic. Even high magecraft that gets close to Magic can tear a person apart. (One example is the time she summonedherservant for the Holy Grail War).
How this is Applicable: Rin was taught a lot of basics of Magecraft, and while she has been born with a rare ability and high magical energy output, she cannot reach "True Magic" levels of power without utilizing gemstones - which is both a time consuming process and not an option to her from the get-go considering characters arrive with nothing. Rin was raised by, and in turn is, a "well rounded" mage and will have a lot of smaller abilities that may not warrant their own section (minor item repair, herbal medicines/potions, knowing the basics of Astromancy, Spiritual Evocation, and Botany magecraft without practicing them deeply herself).
✧ CONVERSION OF POWER
Rin's family excels in the storage of magical energy inside objects. Since the human body can only hold so much energy at one time, the Tohsakas will drain some periodically and store it in objects to be used for later. Not only that, but human bodies limit the amount of magical energy that can be used at once. So by storing a bunch of energy into one object someone can overcome that limit.
Conversion Subsection: Jewelcraft - The Tohsakas typically use jewels to store their magical energy. Not only because stones underground have become more sensitive and attuned to spirits, but because storing energy in anything else is simply more difficult for them. With Rin coming in without even the shirt on her back she'll be limited on what she can do.
✧ BOUNDED FIELD
In short it's a magical barrier. Usually used to create safe havens for a mage. Rin is capable of making one the size of a classroom.
✧ REINFORCEMENT
The idea is to strengthen the object by pulsing magical energy through it. Tohsaka usually uses this to strengthen her body when engaged in hand-to-hand combat or attempting to reach super human speeds with her legs.
✧ Healing
Capable of healing simple stab wounds (non-magic/cursed), revitalizing (not fixing) dead nerves, and stabilizing (not completely healing) someone with a lot of blood loss.
✧ Magic Crest
Engraved on the body in a variety of shapes, most typically in a magic circle, a Magic Crest is a series of Magic Circuits that were given a more stable form in order to act as an archive of thaumaturgical capability. Basically it's like an inscription of spells carved into the mage's body that gets expanded on with each generation and then passed down like an heirloom. Though the process is described more like a magical organ transplant.
Crest Subsection (example): Gandr - One of the spells contained in Rin's Magic Crest. A spell that condenses magical energy into an orb that can be shot like a bullet. Rin can shoot more than one, and even create a barrage. By having this in her crest it needs less resources to cast, like a shorter incantation and less magical energy.
✧ "AVERAGE ONE"
"Manipulation of the 5 elements." This is mentioned as an extremely rare trait, since most mages in the Fate/ franchise have an alignment to one element (or maybe two if they're lucky). To put it simply this indicates she has a high ceiling for her potential cap and that she's not limited to one type of elemental spell/she can be more versatile. In extreme cases this means her affinity allows her to copy or understand her opponents magic more easily.
Magecraft in general utilizes "mana" or magical energy that can be found in all living creatures and in the atmosphere of the planet. However because this needs to be drawn from an exhaustible source all of these abilities aren't limitless. In fact running Rin's magical stamina low would be another reason she'd seek out sex — since a person's magical energy concentrates in the body fluids connected to life (saliva, blood, and arousal fluids).
VICES: ✦ Pride
Pride, perhaps, is the biggest out of all Rin's vices. A large chunk of her self-esteem, self-image, and the structure of her life is built around a foundation of pride. As the sole heir (after her sister was adopted out to another family) it was her responsibility to live up to a family name with a lot of history. As such she will fall prey to attempting to prove her worth, the need to pry praise out of others, and she'll let her façade of elegance fall away if her pride is damaged or wounded in any way she deems unacceptable. A lot of her other character traits and qualities can be rooted back to the umbrella of pride even if they're tucked neatly under another name like a subsection.
✦ Arrogance
Rin has always been the golden child. Popular, top of her class, and someone who all the kids would flock to in elementary school for homework advice. Even as a teen, even as she kept all relationships shallow, people still admired her from affair and propped her up on a pedestal. Because of this she has always had confidence in her abilities and prowess. While Rin is on record saying, "If I know I can't accomplish something I won't even try," but that some how makes it worse. It means that every thing she does think she can accomplish is met with the bluster and confidence of a young woman ready to prove herself who as-of-yet has never been beaten down enough to learn her lesson. This also is a factor in her "I always mess up the most important thing." Rin is prone to taking on challenges she 'knows she can win' so while trying to over plan and force a victory she ends up missing small but critical details that can lead to her own demise.
✦ Vanity
Tying in with her pride, vanity is a huge issue for Tohsaka. As a mage she's lumped in with a class of people who utilize all manner of deceit and underhanded methods to come out on top. Which means Rin finds her body to be "just another weapon in the arsenal." Rin never leaves her house looking less than her best, and despite being the opposite of a morning person she will get up early to make sure that she's visually perfect. Aside from that, Rin also wears noticeable perfume — which is a big statement to make because where she lives it's considered "impolite" to smell too strongly or offensively. Rin will also sew sachets of dried flowers into her clothes, but this is because the medicine she takes to suppress the pain of her Magic Crest "makes her smell like an apothecary". While confident in her looks, she painstakingly watches what she eats (despite a love for food in general and a soft spot for sweets) as well as works out before bed to maintain her image.
✦ Dishonesty
A mage is expected to keep magecraft/Mystery away from the eyes of common people. This goes doubly so as Rin has inherited the title of "overseer" of the land her father once managed. That in combination with the previously mentioned duplicitous nature of mages, Rin has grown up to be dishonest. Rarely does she ever reveal her true feelings or the "whole picture" of her thoughts or opinions. Sometimes she can be blunt and straightforward, but typically she's always hiding some part of herself from others. This shroud of dishonesty becomes even thicker if she's trying to protect someone or views them as a potential thread. Because of this she has a hard time sorting through her own feelings and grappling which parts of herself are true, and which ones were crafted as a defense mechanism.
VIRTUES: ✦ Compassion
One of Rin's biggest virtues is her compassion. While she may say she doesn't understand other people's pain or struggles well, she seems to feel for them all the same. When she was younger Rin had wanted to become "A Witch of Justice" — to using her magecraft as a way to protect the weak and shield them from the dangers of the world they did not know threatened them. However as she grew older this changed. She still felt the desire to help people, but in order to keep her late father proud of her she had to shed the notion of being so noble in that regard. It's a part of the reason she keeps such shallow relationships; for she fears that by following mage law she would have to "erase" any common person who found out about Mystery and magecraft. Even so, the fact that she feels so strongly for others is an insecurity of hers. As it is a trait antithetical to being a mage she fears this natural inclination to wanting others to be safe and happy, and views it as a reason why she has to try so hard to toe the line of being "a good mage". Because if she's not a good mage... then why was she picked as heir over her sister? Yet still she says things like, "I hate seeing other people struggle and try their best only to get nothing out of it in the end."
✦ Responsibility
One of the ways she grapples with her innate caring nature is trying to form her relationships around a structure that could not be so scrutinized by other mages. Sakura explains that Rin categorizes her relationships into "debts and repayments". So that if she wants to keep someone around, all she has to do is rationalize that "this person still owes me, so they cannot leave until I've been repaid". However this also works inversely: if you wish to keep Tohsaka around, put her in a debt that cannot be repaid. Because of her pride and obtuse sense of obligation she will refuse to back out of anything that requires her to become "even" with someone. This also means that she is likely to burden herself with more than she can handle, honor the losing terms of a challenge even if she doesn't like it, and go out of her way to "correct things" that she thinks should have been under her wing to fix. It's most likely a part of her "big sister complex" that never left her, even when Sakura did.
